When we first pulled into the Grantville property, the driveway and adjacent roadway were a challenge. Steep, uneven, and eroding under heavy use, it posed problems for safety, drainage, and daily convenience.
Our goal was clear: make this road safe, stable, and smooth—engineered to handle slope, water, and wear.
A Problem Many Homeowners Understand
For a home in Grantville, PA, heavy rains, winter freeze–thaw cycles, and steep hillsides are part of life. Water runs off fast. Ice forms in shaded dips.
Vehicles slip where roadway grades get too steep or settle too low.
The homeowner needed a driveway that would resist washouts, avoid standing water, and permit easy access even in snow. Some spots on the existing roadway dropped in elevation so dramatically that they held puddles, gathered runoff, or threatened erosion.
Other sections were rising well above where cars drove, creating slope gradients over 12%. Without correction, any asphalt paving would crack or deform quickly.
What We Did: The Transformation
Our crew at ProSeal Asphalt Maintenance Inc. was contacted to reshape about 2,000 linear feet—grading the entire road to bring the slope to or below 12 percent. In places, we raised portions by up to 18 inches, carving and packing a strong subgrade for support.
Once the grading was perfect, we laid down 3 inches of 19 mm base course asphalt. Then we rolled and compacted it thoroughly so the surface would resist ruts, shifting, and water intrusion.
The key steps were:
- Surveying the existing pitch, slope, and drainage paths
- Cutting or filling to even grade; raising spots up to a foot and a half
- Compacting the subgrade before any asphalt to avoid settling or frost heave
- Applying a thick, strong base course asphalt mix
- Rolling and compacting in multiple passes until the density met specs
Results That Show
Right after completion, the difference was obvious:
- The slope is now uniform, never exceeding 12%, which controls rainwater runoff and reduces erosion. Vehicles stop sliding in winter.
- Drainage paths flow properly; there are no puddles or wet spots collecting water.
- The surface feels firm underfoot and tire, no bouncing, squishing, or shifting.
- Future lifespan is extended; the strong base course plus compaction sets up the driveway to resist cracking and deformation even under load.
One homeowner testimonial sums it up: “We used to dread driving in after a storm—now the road drains clean, feels like a proper driveway, and I sleep easier.”
